HISTORY OF DOCE PARES ESKRIMA SOCIETY
The Doce Pares Eskrima Club/Society was founded on January 11th in 1932 by a small dedicated group of Cebuano Eskrima Masters led by Eulogio Cañete, and also with the help from Lorenzo, Teodoro and Frederico Saavedra, because they were the great stickfighing Masters from that Visayan region of the Philippine Islands.
Twelve of these Cebuano Eskrima Masters originally conceptualized the idea, but shortly after its inauguration on January 21st that same year, the D.P.E club's membership then increased to the number of twenty four 'ESKRIMADORS' when it was established.
Eulogio Cañete and Teodoro Saavedra were elected as President and Vice President respectively, and all of these Masters below were the elected officers, or original members-
Fortunato Peñalosa, Marcelo Verano, Deogracias Nadela, Rodolfo Quijano,
Pio Deiparine, Florentino Cañete, Felimon Cañete, Juanito Lauron, Strong Tupas,
Federico Saavedra, Cecilio Dela Victoria, Lorenzo Saavedra, Margarito Revilles and Anastacio Deiparine.
The original name of 'Doce Pares' was adopted because the name gives the respect and reference to the twelve bodyguards of Emperor Charlemagne in France (AD 768-814).
These twelve Bodyguards were the top swordsmen that were known to have fought and killed hundreds of enemies in battles that they fought all over France at that time.
The name 'Doce Pares' which means "Twelve pairs" in the Spanish language, was also meant to give honour to the twelve Cebuano Eskrima Masters who had originally planned to form this Elite Eskrima Society, so when the membership increased to twenty four at the time of the inauguration, the new name then indeed became so much more significant too.
The famous Doce Pares Eskrima Club/Society is now recognised as one of the greatest Cebuano stickfighting styles from the Visayan Island of Cebu, and it is also known as one of the real best stickfighting styles in the Philippines, thats why the name is often mentioned in the many Filipino Martial Arts Articles, Books, and also the many stories that have been written by Filipino Martial Art Masters over the years since its establishment.
'Cacoy Canete' was recognised as the best fighter in the Doce Pares Eskrima Society!
